Abstract
Abstract: A simple approach of graphical ray tracing (GRT) is formulated for the correct orientation of heliostats with two-axis Azimuth-Elevation (AE) and Spinning-Elevation (SE) tracking techniques. Consequently, the coordinates of the SE technique are changed, and a new Center-Oriented Spinning-Elevation (COSE) tracking method is developed. In this method, the heliostat aiming strategy of target facing is changed to the on-ground center of the tower. This configuration substantially reduces the angular increments of heliostat motors to track the instantaneous sun position. Thus, COSE ultimately reduces tracking effort and ensures smooth and jerk-free operation of heliostat motors. The same GRT code is used to trace the reflected image of heliostat on the receiver surface for all tracking methods and compared based on the size and shape of the image. Comparatively, COSE shows decent reflected images and can be a helpful technique in minimizing optical losses and receiver size.
