Abstract
A novel multilevel electric vehicle (EV) charging station based on the hybrid series converter (HSC) and dual active bridge (DAB) is proposed in this paper (HSC-DAB). The proposed converter has two chain links (CLs) in each phase (SCL & PCL). The PCL generates unipolar voltage with fixed amplitude. The SCL is capable of generating variable ac voltage, which regulates the overall modulation index (M.I.) of the proposed converter. The PCL and SCL consist of half-bridge and full-bridge (FB) sub modules, respectively. The electric vehicles (EVs) are charged through the DABs connected across the HBSMs and FBSMs. Moreover, the proposed converter is capable of providing active and reactive power support to the ac grid in all possible four quadrants. The mathematical analysis covering the power transfer from ac and dc grid to EV s connected in PCL and SCL is derived, clearly demonstrating the control freedom available to achieve the required power transfer. Furthermore, the working of proposed HSC DAB converter is validated with simulation and experimental study.
