Abstract
Motorized Two Wheelers (MTWs) account for over 73% of total registered vehicles in India. Due to their unique physical and dynamic characteristics, they exhibit certain notorious driving behaviour, which cause changes in traffic volume and capacity, in addition to creating a potential hazard for all road users. One of the most intuitive solutions is provision of lanes that can be occupied only by MTWs. Although such lanes are already in use in some regions across the world, the unique road usage patterns and driving characteristics of the Indian subcontinent demand specific research regarding the provision of such facility. In this respect, this study aims at investigating the effect of provision of an Exclusive MTW lane (EML) in Mumbai, India. Video data was used to extract parameters such as speeds and volumes, which were incorporated into a simulation model. Later, an EML was incorporated into the stretch and the changes in flow parameters were recorded. The changes in estimated capacity values were determined. The analysis revealed that providing the EML in such conditions increased the capacity by about 20%. This study will help in development of guidelines for provision of EML and for further such research in the specific traffic conditions found in India.
