Abstract
The work aims to understand the influence of oxide scales and chloride ions on the pickling behaviour of hot-rolled steel coil. The thickness and nature of the oxide scale (such as the content of the phases and the phases present in different regions) were found to vary across the width of the steel coil. NaCl addition to 10% HCl reduced pickling time by 3.3 times and the corrosion rate of the bare steel by 1.5 times. Chlorides enhanced chemical dissolution of the oxide scale, by complexing, and inhibiting corrosion of steel through the familiar Temkin adsorption mechanism.
