Abstract
In this paper, a 2-element wideband, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with a quarter-mode substrate integrated waveguide (QMSIW) and a 90-degree bent planar dipole based on the complementary antenna principle for sub-6 GHz applications is proposed. The dielectric aperture of the QMSIW acts as a magnetic dipole and the 90-degree bent planar dipole acts as an electric dipole. The proposed complementary antenna is fed coaxially. A prototype is fabricated with a substrate thickness of 2.54 mm, which achieves a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 29%, isolation higher than 18.6 dB (varying between 18.6 dB and 44.2 dB), an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) of less than 0.005, maximum realized gain of 5.22 dBi and, a channel capacity loss less than 0.4 b/s/Hz. The effect of the substrate thickness on the bandwidth is studied.
