Abstract
Communication towers are an important component in a broadband network. These towers are usually made of steel, which poses major economic and logistic roadblocks for rural communities located in remote areas. In this study, a sustainable and low-cost technology for rural communication towers is proposed using bamboo. The overall advantages of bamboo over a steel tower are illustrated through a case study. A collaborative research project is proposed to develop this technological framework considering material costs, environmental impact, sustainability and effective dissemination, while ensuring community ownership and participation.
