Abstract
Owing to the benefits of multi-level dual-active-bridge (DAB) converters, they are being considered as one of the most prominent choices for EV battery charging applications. In this paper, a five-level hybrid active NPC-based (FL-HANPC) DAB converter is investigated for such applications. The presented converter is comprised of Si and SiC switches, wherein a novel control scheme is proposed to achieve optimal utilization of its switching devices. Further, the proposed control scheme enables optimal operation of FL-HANPC DAB converter by selecting the suitable operating mode and control variables to achieve improved performance. In this paper, operation of the FL-HANPC DAB converter is discussed using three different operating modes. Further, a detailed discussion on implementation of the proposed control scheme is presented. The analysis is carried out to study the feasibility of converter operating modes to achieve soft-switching operation of all Si switches. Further, the optimization problem is formulated to select the most optimal point for the considered converter. Moreover, simulation results are presented to validate the converter operation using the proposed control scheme. Finally, a scaled-down experimental setup is constructed to revalidate the analytical and simulation results.
