Abstract
The role of microstructure on the cathodic reactions and plastic deformation behavior of AA 7050 was examined to understand the environmentally assisted cracking tendency of this alloy. Notwithstanding the adverse coherent character and cathodic behavior of the metastable precipitates (Guiner-Preston I zones, Guiner-Preston II zones) in comparison to the incoherent precipitates (ɳ), the alloy has high ability to resist environmentally assisted cracking as long as the grain boundary precipitates are rich in Cu. The matrix precipitates’ size and morphology influence the dislocation slip behavior and the hydrogen influences the dislocation slip behavior differently in the above cases.
