Abstract
Involuntary resettlement is an inevitable phenomenon in many urban scenarios. Sustainability in this article refers to the survival and sustenance of the affected population. Several researchers point out the dire need for the inclusion of gender dynamics in resettlement policy studies, based on the fact that if vital land deals flout gender issues they will further widen the disparities and resource paucity. Time and again researchers have enlisted many gender biases in involuntary resettlement processes but whether these discussions reach the common mass and create any awareness is the question we speculate upon here. This article consists of a study of recent media articles from five leading Indian English newspapers and a quantitative as well as qualitative analysis of how well Project-Affected Women’s needs are communicated to the mass. Post analysis the article concludes with policy recommendations for sustainable and gender-sensitive resettlement planning.
