Abstract
A brief overview of the major classes of cathode materials is presented in this chapter along with the essential characteristics of efficient cathode material. We have focused, in particular, on a detailed description of the crystal structure and electronic properties of cathode materials, and how a change in lithium concentration affects the thermodynamic and structural properties of the compound. The polymorphism in the case of lithium iron silicate is discussed. The pathways for lithium-ion diffusion are also discussed whether it is one-, two-, or three-dimensional diffusion. We have also discussed different synthesis techniques in brief. At last, the relative thermal stability of different cathode materials has been compared.
