Abstract
In polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) data analysis, target characterization is usually performed either using model-based decomposition techniques or by the eigenvector-eigenvalue based decomposition techniques. Therefore, there is a limitation to simultaneously extract the target scattering-type parameter and scattering powers by these existing techniques. Hence, keeping in mind this shortcoming, we pro-pose a unique method that concurrently provides a target scattering-type parameter and model-free scattering power components. This technique brings a paradigm shift in the theory of polarimetric target characterization. We show that the target scattering-type parameter adequately interprets scattering characteristics from different land cover targets using the C-band RADARSAT-2 data. We also show the classification performance of several different land cover classes using the scattering power components from the L-band UAVSAR data. The overall classification accuracy using the proposed scattering power components outperforms the overall classification accuracy compared to the Yamaguchi four-component decomposition powers.
