Abstract
Finite element analyses are performed to investigate the influence of layered clays on the undrained response of embedded strip footings under uniaxial and combined loading. A fully bonded footing-soil interface was considered to comply with the undrained condition. Transformation in failure mechanism under uniaxial (vertical, horizontal, and moment) loading due to the involvement of the soft/strong underlying clay is extensively studied. Analysis-based bearing capacity values of strip footing for different combinations of embedment, top layer depth, and shear strength ratio are provided. The present study accounts for the interaction between coupling of horizontal and rotational displacements and underlying clay layer properties while investigating the combined load response. Subsequent effect of this interaction on the maximum and ultimate horizontal and moment capacities are quantified. In addition, the contribution of different footing and soil properties in altering size and obliquity of the failure envelope is categorically studied.
