Abstract
Method: In this study, control effectiveness of optimal tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) on acrosswind response control of 76 story wind-excited benchmark tall building is investigated. The optimal design of TLCD was carried out using nonlinear constraint optimization technique. The absolute value of top floor peak acceleration was used as objective function and constraints were placed on the liquid column displacement and tuning frequency of vibration of the TLCD. Results: The structural response of benchmark tall building with and without optimal TLCD is compared. It is found that the optimal TLCD effectively control the structural response of thebuilding. Beat phenomenon is also observed in liquid displacement as well as structural response time histories. To investigate the effect of off-tuning due to change in the stiffness of the building, uncertainties in the stiffness were considered and the performance of optimal TLCD was investigated. Conclusion: It is found that the optimal TLCD is robust against acceleration control, but needs improvement against displacement control.
